Bullets Flying Over Abortion Coverage in Health Reform Bill

It’s high noon for abortion coverage in the health reform bill, and the pistols are drawn, U.S. MoldNews’s Deborah Kotz writes. Who will win the duel over abortions if and when a final bill is passed remains to be seen. Simply put, abortion-rights activists want the language in any final healthcare bill to allow insurance plans in the federal exchange system to provide abortion coverage as part of their comprehensive plans. Those opposed to abortion don’t want any plans in the exchange to offer abortion coverage.#x The Senate bill and the White House tweaks to it that will be the basis of the final reconciliation bill contain language that’s something of a compromise—allowing abortion coverage but with restrictions.

Planned Parenthood, which supports abortion coverage, fired off a missive last week from President Cecile Richards, who said that she wasn’t happy with either the House bill or the Senate version. “Under the burdensome Nelson provision in the Senate healthcare reform bill,” Richards said in an E-mailed statement, “it is anticipated that most private health insurers would no longer offer coverage for abortion. Since most women with private health insurance have coverage for abortion, the Nelson provision would take away coverage that women have now.” The Nelson provision does allow plans to offer coverage, but it requires every enrollee who wants it to write a separate check for it. #x

Cablevision likely winner in ABC dispute -Moody’s
“We award this Oscar to Cablevision as the likely victor, Diamond bladethis time,” Moody’s said in a report. Disney “presumably ceded more ground than it would have liked….If not, #xCablevision’s track record suggests that a blackout of the ABC TV station programming would have almost certainly ensued.”

Cablevision (CVC.N) reached a last-minute deal with Disney late on Sunday that returned WABC-TV, the New York-area ABC station, to cable customers 12 minutes into the Oscars, one of the most-watched events of the year. For details click on

Cablevision gave no financial details of the agreement.

The stalemate stemmed from a dispute over how much cable and satellite companies should pay to carry programming of broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.

“For Cablevision, the credit implication of losing ABC-7, #xparticularly ahead of the Academy Awards show, would have been negative,” Moody’s said. Some Cablevision customers would have defected to other pay-TV providers as they grew increasingly tired of blackouts, the rating agency said.

Cablevision’s New York-area customers lost signals from WABC early on Sunday,Diamond blade the second blackout in 2010. In January, Scripps Network Interactive pulled its Food Network and HGTV channels for three weeks in a similar dispute.

“We believe that Cablevision’s rivals will benefit from this latest stand-off — principally Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N), whose relatively new FiOS fiber-optic TV service has been making inroads into Cablevision’s metro-NY markets,Metal halide lamps,” Moody’s said.

The stand-off had no impact on Disney’s credit profile because ABC and its New York station are only a small part of Disney’s overall business, Diamond bladeMoody’s said.#x

Calif state senator says he’s gay after DUI arrest
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Republican state Sen. Roy Ashburn said Monday he is gay, Concrete Mixerending days of speculation that began after his arrest last week for investigation of driving under the influence.#x
Ashburn, who consistently voted against gay rights measures during his 14 years in the state Legislature, came out in an interview with KERN radio in Bakersfield, the area he represents.

Ashburn said he felt compelled to address rumors that he had visited a gay nightclub near the Capitol before his DUI arrest.

The 55-year-old father of four said he had tried to keep his personal life separate from his professional life until his March 3 arrest.

Ashburn was arrested after he was spotted driving erratically near the Capitol, according to the California Highway Patrol. Shelly Orio, a spokeswoman from the Sacramento County district attorney’s office, said a breath test showed the senator’s blood-alcohol level was .14 percent, or .06 points above the legal limit.#x

The next day, reports surfaced that Ashburn had left Faces,Compact fluorescent lamp, a gay nightclub,Concrete Mixer with an unidentified man in the passenger seat of his Senate-owned vehicle.

Intel debuts six-core gaming chip
Intel has officially introduced its six-core monster for high-end gaming boxes–its first desktop chip packing that many processing cores.
As previously reported,Hydraulic Hose the Core i7- 980X Extreme Edition processor was introduced #xat the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.

The chip is based on Intel’s newest 32-nanometer process technology. Generally, the smaller the manufacturing process, the better the performance. Most Intel processors still use “fatter” 45-nanometer technology.

Like other Core i series processors, Hydraulic Hoseit features Hyper-Threading, which can double the number of tasks–or threads–a processor can execute. The technology, which is not offered on prior-generation Core 2 chips, #xallows a six-core processor can handle 12 threads.

Intel also introduced GPA (graphics performance analyzer) v3.0, which helps PC game developers analyze and optimize game performance. The updated development platform supports multicore optimizations and includes support for DirectX 10.1 and 64-bit game executables, Intel said.

Intel also recently rolled out Core i3, i5,beads, and i7 processors for laptops, which can take advantage of GPA v3.0.

#x to put an electric drivetrain in a standard-issue mail truck. Once the truck is ready to roll, the postal service will add it to its fleet for real-world testing in the Washington, DC area. The company joins the EV pioneers at AC Propulsion in developing prototype trucks for the postal service, which is considering ways to begin electrifying its fleet of 142,000 vehicles.

Although Bright unveiled its Idea plug-in hybrid delivery truck compact fluorescent lamplast year, postal brass want the Indiana company to electrify a Grumman LLV, or “Long Life Vehicle,” typically used for mail delivery. The startup automaker says adapting its technology and bringing EVs to the world’s largest civilian fleet will save the postal service big bucks.

Google Maps Finally Adds Bike Routes
At long last, Google Maps has routes specifically for bikes.

With the click of a mouse, the new feature allows you to plot the best Grow lights(and flattest!) ride from Point A to Point B#x. Several cities, including New York, Minneapolis, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, have bike-specific mapping sites. But Google is rolling it out in 150 cities nationwide and announcing it Wednesday at the 10th Annual Bike Summit in Washington, D.C.

“This has been a top-requested feature from Google Maps users for the last couple years,” says Shannon Guymon, product manager for Google Maps. “There are over 50,000 signatures on a petition.”

The news thrilled bike advocates, who have for years been pushing — and petitioning — the search giant to include bike routes on Google Maps. No longer do they have to rely upon paper maps or open-source DIY map hacking or crazy-cool helmet-mounted heads up iPhones.

“This new tool will open people’s eyes to the possibility and practicality of hopping Grow lightson a bike and riding,” says Andy Clarke, president of the League of American Bicyclists. “We know people want to ride more, we know it’s good for people and communities when they do ride more — this makes it possible. It is a game-changer, especially for those short trips that are the most polluting.”

Cyclists will have to map their victory lap from their desks, because Google’s cool mapping tool is available only on a computer for now.

“Making the bike-route tool available on Google Maps for mobile devices is a high priority,Carbon fiber hood,” Guymon says. But it’s a priority without a launch date.

To create the mapping tool, Google developed an algorithm that uses several inputs — including designated bike lanes or trails, topography and traffic signals — to determine the best route for riding. The map sends you around, not over, hills. But if you really want to tackle that Category 1 climb, you can click and drag the suggested route anywhere you like, just like you can with pedestrian or driving routes#x. Users can suggest changes or make corrections toGrow lights routes using the ever-present “report a problem” feature on Google Maps.
